Fosse Raceway

About Us

Fosse Raceway is Andy Smith's  latest slotcar project in the East Midlands.  Andy was first involved in slotracing in the 1970's with the March Mustangs club formed in Andy's home town of March by Mike Harvey who  presently runs the Presto Park Club.  When he moved to Leicester in the early eighties he was one of the last members of the great Leicester club that raced on Sawday Street, this being less than a stones throw away from the present location.  By this time all the "stars" and famous names associated with the club had left and abandoned the club, it being in the hands of a few Loughborough students.  That clubroom closed down and the club rellocated briefly to Southfield's College using the portable Loughborough track before closing down.  After this, slotracing in Leicester centered on the Quorn Club racing Scalex type cars.  Andy next got involved in slotracing with the Peterborough Club with Mike Thomson and spent 4 years making a 110 mile trip each week to race slotcars.  Peterborough's clubroom collapsed though and the club folded.
Andy then decided to set up a club in Leicester and formed the Leicester Slotcar Club in his own village of Enderby.  The club had its ups and downs however  and Andy found that despite building the vast majority of the track and clubroom single-handedly he was locked out of his clubroom by certain individuals.  So after giving due notice and having sought the permission of the landlord he recovered his property from the clubroom and left the club, never to return.
About this time a portable track became available in Swindon so Andy bought this and ran a club out of Enderby Cricket Club for a year before moving to our present location back at the Leicester Electric Cricket club on Aylestone Road, Leicester returning slotracing back to its historical roots in the city one street away from where Leicester SlotCar Club was loated in its heyday.  Here Fosse Raceway remains and is gradually growing into a friendly little club where people race slotcars for fun in a very sociable environment.

So thats a brief history of the club, but what of its future?  Well its location is secure in the Leicester Electric Cricket club where the track is permanently in place on top of the old snooker table.  Because the portable track obtained from Four Lane Black Top didn't fit, a substantial realteration had to take place, the result being a very different design to most modern tracks with quirky corners and complicated track sections.  This is REAL racing providing close, competitive sport in a track that presents a constant challenge to drive.
The membership of ther club is steadily growing with three new James's, Keith and Alex joining Colin and Tony as well as Andy and his family from the Enderby Club.
The club races most Friday nights, and as the membership builds, so its hoped this will become every Friday.  Racing nights are from 7-10pm and fees are set at £3.00 for adults and £1.00 for children / students.  A family atmosphere is encouraged and to this end all are welcome. The other key element is the beer - its good and cheap making it an excellent Friday night's entertainment.  As for the future?  A new race control system have been implemented so that it is easier to start and stop the race, and eventually Andy hopes to relay the track with CNC cut MDF with accurately recessed braid as, by his own admission, a track constructed quickly in a semi dark room in freezing temperatures is bound to have a few issues....
But the track is well driveable and provides close racing across the four lanes as it is.
The club races basic slotcars that are cheap and readily availalble and has no plans to race anything else.
Come down and see us some time and have some fun!
